Addiction Series Part 2: Introduction to Opioids

Why am I spending so much time and effort discussing opioids? Simple: opioid misuse and overdose is a public health EPIDEMIC. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drug overdose kills more people than motor vehicle accidents; and, as of 2015, more than gun homicides. Most of these drug overdose deaths are associated with opioids. Watch my Health Tips video “Addiction 2: Introduction to Opioids” to learn more.*

Types of Opioids

  1. Natural Opioids –>¬†morphine, codeine
  2. Synthetic Opioids –> methadone, fentanyl, tramadol
  3. Semi-synthetic Opioids –> oxycodone, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone

Popular Brand Names of Opioid-Based Drugs

Percoset = oxycodone + acetaminophen
Vicodin = hydrocodone + acetaminophen
Lortab = hydrocodone + acetaminophen
Ultram = tramadol
Dilaudid = hydromorphone
